Hiking Trails in Tyrol's Karwendelgebirge

The surrounding mountain world invites you to take walks, hikes in the hill country, or set out on mountaineering expeditions:
Regardless of whether you prefer to hike through wild, romantic Wolfsklamm gorge or to St. Georgenberg Abbey, or if a hike to the alpine huts at the Ganalm, Walderalm and Hinterhornalm is more your cup of tea - you are certain to find something that is just to your liking.

Also the Kellerjoch (take the chair lift from Schwaz), the Spieljochbahn in Zillertal and yet other hiking opportunities near the Achensee, are all within easy reach.

Pfitscherjoch

The Pfitscherjochhaus (www.pfitscherjochhaus.com) is the oldest private refuge hut in South Tyrol. The hut is located on the Italian-Austrian border in the Zillertal Alps, elevation 2276 m.

Ginzling

Ginzlin, Tyrol, Austria

The village of Ginzling lies at an elevation of 999 m above sea level, in the Zemmgrund, one of the side valleys of the Zillertal, set against the fascinating alpine backdrop of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park.

Kellerjoch and Kreuzjoch - THE mountain in Tyrol – the ultimate prospect!

Getting to the Start

Take your car from Fügen in the direction of Hochfügen. Turn off at the Hofer, drive past the mid station for the gondola lift (Kohleralmhof) and keep heading north in the direction of the Wildauwald. When the road reaches its high point (elev. 1388 m), turn southwest, continuing in the direction of  Geolsalm - Gartalm-Hochleger (elev. 1849 m).
This is a private dirt road that should only be taken by those experienced in driving in the mountains.

When you get to the Gartalm-Hochleger, be sure to ask for permission to park and let them know you plan on eating there. This is private property, so you will save yourself all kinds of aggravation!

If you are experienced in the mountains, you will find the trail easy to negotiate, taking you via the Kellerjochhütte (2237 m) to the chapel on the Kreuzjoch (2344 m). From the Gartalm, it is about a 1.5 hr. walk to the Kellerjoch. Reckon with another 30 minutes to the Kreuzjoch.

This is an excursion you can also begin from the Inntal Valley, simply by taking the Kellerjoch lift from Schwaz. From the summit terminal it is about one hour to the Kreuzjoch.
Though we have to say, this option is rather like eating soup without the salt!

If you prefer something more extreme, why not hike up from the summit terminal of the Spieljochbahn along trail No. 8. But make sure you check beforehand that this path is passable! As a descent, only suitable for experienced mountaineers!

Make sure you bring: mountaineering gear, surefootedness, drinks and emergency provisions.

If visibility is good, this outing is a true highlight of any stay in the Zillertal!

The Floitental

The "Floite", which is the name the locals give to this valley, is best reached from Ginzling, the "mountaineers' village". Sheltered by the Dristner, we enjoy a leisurely hike into the valley, with refreshment stops along the way including the Tristenbachalm (/www.tristenbachalm.at/ ), the Steinbockhütte (www.bergverlag.at/uploads/media/zill4_31.pdf ) and the Sulzalm.

The Floitenschlagstaude

A legendary and true story about Tyrol's only female poacher.
Until the 1960's and 70's, the name "Staude" was on everyone's tongue. Elisabeth Hollaus, nicknamed the "Staude", the woman from Floitenschlag, who poached out of pure necessity and to whose children terrible things happened - this tale is recounted in the book "Floitenschlagstaude" by Wilhelm E. Hofer. The exciting and gripping description of an extraordinary life and an extraordinary woman.

Berlin High Trail

…an unforgettable hike with beautiful scenery and refreshment stops at traditional alpine inns.

The Berlin High Trail runs from Finkenberg or Ginzling to the Gamshütte – then to the Friesenberghaus – via the Olpererhütte ( www.olpererhuette.info ) to the Furtschaglhaus ( www.furtschaglhaus.com )– it then continues over the Schönbichler Horn to the Berliner Hütte ( www.berlinerhütte.at )– now to the Mönchnerscharte and the Greizer Hütte ( www.alpenverein-greiz.de/de/einrichtungen/greizer_huette.html ) – over the Lapenscharte to the Kassler Hütte (www.alpenverein.and along the Siebenschneideweg to the Edelhütte ( www.alpenverein.at/huettenHome/DE/Home/index.php?huetteNr=0576 ) – concluding with a hike back down to Mayrhofen ( www.mayrhofen.at )

The Maxhütte

The Maxhütte is a great excursion destination for the whole family, perfect for young and old no matter what the weather.
