Innsbruck

Innsbruck - the provincial capital - is only about 25 km from our farm, while the towns of Schwaz and Wattens, the Achensee and the Zillertal aren't far away either.

This building was the residence of Tyrol's ruling princes, Frederick IV and Sigmund "The Coin-Rich", from 1420 until about 1460. Its ornamental oriels, covered with 2657 gold-plated copper tiles, are very much the emblem of this city, which Emperor Maximilian I commissioned from Niclas Türing (the elder) and which was completed, according to an inscription, in the year 1500.

The frescoes are the work of Maximilian's court painter, Jörg Kölderer. The oriel reliefs depict portraits of Maximilian and his two wives, surrounded by Moorish dancers.

Coats-of-arms and symbols contribute to this complex work of art, one which reflects the self-assuredness of Maximilian.

It was impossible to decipher the writing behind the dancers depicted on the relief.
